This is general information about umbrellas and sun cover, not medical advice. A UPF rating describes how much ultraviolet light a fabric lets through; it is the rating printed on the label, and shade from an umbrella is one layer of protection, not all of it. For advice about your skin, follow the guidance of a dermatologist or a public health body.
What the guidance says
The Skin Cancer Foundation, Sun-Protective Clothing. UPF indicates how much UV radiation, both UVB and UVA, a fabric allows to reach the skin. A UPF 50 fabric blocks 98 percent of the sun's rays and lets about one fiftieth through; the foundation rates UPF 30 to 49 as very good and UPF 50+ as excellent. Read September 24, 2026. US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Sun Safety. The CDC lists shade under an umbrella, a tree or other shelter as one way to reduce the risk of sun damage, alongside clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher and sunglasses. UV rays are strongest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daylight saving time in the continental US. Read September 24, 2026. US National Park Service, The Ten Essentials. The park service lists navigation, sun protection, extra clothing, illumination, first aid, fire, a repair kit, extra food, water and emergency shelter as the ten essentials for a day hike, and advises packing an extra layer, such as a rain shell, for the most extreme conditions you could meet.
