From 25 liters up, a daypack has room for a warm layer, a rain shell, two liters of water and food for more than one person. These still fold down into their own pocket for travel, so the bigger size costs you nothing in the suitcase.
The shoulder straps are breathable mesh and adjust for length. There is no frame and, on most of these, no hip belt: they are daypacks, comfortable to about the weight of a loaded day, not built to carry an overnight load.
