Care

Umbrella care, wind and travel

An umbrella lasts as long as its ribs and its canopy. Both are easy to look after once you know what hurts them.

Most umbrellas that end up in a bin were not worn out, they were caught by one gust at the wrong angle or folded away wet. Both are avoidable, and neither needs anything more than a minute of habit.

In wind

Our ribs are fiberglass, which bends under load and returns to shape, so a gust that would kink a steel rib usually only flexes these. Point the canopy into the wind rather than holding it straight up, and the pressure spreads across the whole canopy instead of lifting one edge.

On the golf umbrellas the vent between the two canopy layers lets a gust pass through. If the umbrella does turn inside out, turn it back into the wind and it will usually snap into shape on its own; forcing the ribs back by hand is what breaks them.

Drying

Open it and let it dry fully before you close it for storage. A canopy folded wet for days picks up a smell and marks, and water left in the joints is what makes a frame stiff. A shake at the door takes most of the water off the coated fabric.

Flying with an umbrella

The US Transportation Security Administration allows umbrellas in carry-on bags and in checked bags. It asks travelers to check with their airline about size and weight limits, which is where a long golf umbrella and a compact one part company: the compact rides in a carry-on pocket, the golf umbrella goes in the hold with the clubs.

The numbers here are the ones the crew behind ZOMAKE put on the product pages, not a rule of thumb copied from elsewhere.

Questions

Questions about looking after an umbrella

  • Can you take a ZOMAKE umbrella on a plane?

Yes. The TSA allows umbrellas in carry-on and checked bags, and asks you to check your airline's size limits. A compact umbrella fits a carry-on pocket; a golf umbrella usually travels in the hold.
  • What should you do if your ZOMAKE umbrella turns inside out?

Turn it back into the wind and let the air push the canopy back into shape. The fiberglass ribs flex rather than kink, so they usually return on their own.
